On Wednesday, March 4, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law is presenting a lecture by Nelson Tebbe of Brooklyn and Cornell Law Schools, as part of its annual McElroy Lecture Series on Law and Religion. This year's lecture by Prof. Tebbe, "Religion and Social Coherentism: A Progressive Theory of Religious Freedom," begins at 5 p.m. in room 226 of UDM Law, 651 East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit. The lecture is complimentary and open to the public. Parking will be provided nearby at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in the parking garage at 611 Congress Street.
Tebbe is a professor at Brooklyn Law School and visiting professor at Cornell Law School. He teaches courses on constitutional law, religious freedom, freedom of speech, legal theory, and professional responsibility. His scholarship focuses on constitutional law, and in particular the relationship between religious traditions and democratic governments, both in the United States and abroad.
His articles have appeared in the Georgetown Law Journal, Journal of Religion, Michigan Law Review, Minnesota Law Review, University of Pennsylvania Law Review, and Virginia Law Review. His opinion pieces have been published in Slate and The New York Times. He is co-organizer of the Annual Law and Religion Roundtable and he serves on the Board of Consultants of the Journal of Religion, which is peer edited and published at the University of Chicago.
Before teaching, Tebbe clerked for U.S. Court of Appeals Judge John M. Walker Jr., Second Circuit, and practiced law at the American Civil Liberties Union and at Davis, Polk, & Wardwell. He was also a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.
Tebbe received his bachelor of arts degree from Brown University, in Religious Studies and his law degree from Yale Law School. He also received a Ph.D. in Anthropology and the Sociology of Religion from the University of Chicago.
In February of 1998, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law began the McElroy Lecture Series to address prominent issues of religion, law, and society. Prior lecturers have been U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, Stephen L. Carter, Adam Cardinal Maida, Judge John T. Noonan Jr., Michael John Perry, Dr. Jaroslav Pelikan, Dennis W. Archer, Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr., Cass R. Sunstein, Noah Feldman, Dr. Leslie Griffin, Cardinal Roger Mahony, John Witte Jr., Douglas M. Laycock, Marci A. Hamilton, and Sarah Barringer Gordon. The school is able to sponsor this event due to a bequest from one of its graduates, Philip J. McElroy, to establish the Center of Law and Religion at UDM Law.
