Two judges to be honored for Years of Service, October 19

Judge Craig S. Strong and Judge Ulysses W. Boykin, members of the Wayne County Circuit Court bench, will be honored with Years of Service certificates at a special virtual ceremony on Monday, October 19, from 5 to 6 p.m.

"Join us as we recognize the years of judicial service for Hon. Craig S. Strong and Hon. Ulysses W. Boykin," said a spokesperson for the Detroit Bar Association. "Reginald Turner, president-elect of the American Bar Association and the past president of the National Bar Association, will dialogue with the honorees and highlight their years on the bench.

"At the close of the evening, Chief Judge Timothy M. Kenny will present the years of service certificate."

Strong is a highly respected and widely known jurist. In 1978, Strong was elected to a seat on the Detroit Recorder's Court. Strong has remained on the bench ever since and currently sits on the Wayne County Circuit Court, where he is the longest serving judge on the bench. Strong has served as president of the Association of Black Judges of Michigan, president of the Wolverine Bar Association, and national chair of the National Bar Association's Judicial Council representing judges of color in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean Islands.

Boykin received his law degree from Harvard Law School where he was one of the founders of the Black Law Student Association. Boykin became the first African-American attorney to practice at Dickinson Wright in Detroit. In 1999, Gov. John Engler appointed Boykin to the Wayne County Circuit Court. Boykin has served as the chairman of the Young Lawyers Section of the Detroit Bar Association, on the board of the Wolverine Bar Association, and in various capacities for the Association of Black Judges of Michigan.

The online Zoom meeting is free to all participants, who will receive a Zoom link the day before the event. For questions, contact Julie Van Hove at jvanhove@detroitlawyer.org.
