Miller Canfield will present the September Virtual Aerospace and Defense Luncheon “Creating and Maintaining a Corporate Culture of Compliance During a Pandemic” online Wednesday, November 17, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.
Creating a culture of compliance, in which employees understand and comply with legal requirements like the FCPA and act with honesty and integrity as required by the company’s code of ethics, is critically important. Creating such a culture of compliance within a company can make the difference between real and effective compliance, as reflected in the company’s everyday business operations, and a paper compliance program that involves mechanical or check-the-box actions, which do not reflect employees’ underlying values and do not affect employees’ conduct in carrying out the company’s business operations.
Creating and maintaining such a culture of compliance is never easy. It has been especially challenging, however, during the present pandemic because of interruptions to travel and transportation; the inability to conduct face-to-face interviews, meetings, training and audits; and the economic and other pressures employees and many companies have faced to cut corners and focus on making sales at a time of prolonged global disruption and crisis.
This program will feature a discussion focused on steps that companies can take to create an environment in which compliance with anti-corruption and other laws, corporate policies and procedures, and the code of ethics becomes internalized and woven into the fabric of the company’s culture. There are significant differences in corporate cultures within the A&D industry, and developing and maintaining a corporate culture in which legal and ethical compliance are highly valued and widely embraced at all levels of the company can be challenging, especially at present.
The experienced panel will include:

• Carl Hahn, vice president and chief compliance officer, Northrop Grumman Corporation
• Roxane MacGillivray, director, Enterprise Operations & International Ethics, Office of Ethics and Business Conduct, Lockheed Martin Corporation
• Martin Rips, chief ethics and compliance officer, executive director and associate general counsel, Raytheon Intelligence & Space
Howard Weissman of Miller Canfield’s Washington, D.C. office will moderate the discussion.
