Taxation Section presenting two webinars in March

The Taxation Section of the State Bar of Michigan will present two webinars in March.

“Tax Planning for Real Estate Investments and Real Estate Professionals” will be offered on Thursday, March 10, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. via Zoom.

Presenting at the webinar will be Ivan Hewines of Plante Moran who will discuss tax planning for real estate investments and real estate professionals. There will also be a Q&A session.

“Pursuing and Protecting Tax Advantages with Powers of Appointment” will take place on Tuesday, March 15, from noon to 1:15 p.m. via Zoom.

Presenting at the webinar will be James P. Spica, of Chalgian & Tripp Law Offices, with moderator Buzz S. Leach.

Spica focuses his practice on estate planning for high?net?worth individuals.  He is recognized for his work in developing trust law both nationally, as a Uniform Law commissioner and an American Bar Association advisor to the ULC (assigned to drafting committees for the Uniform Directed Trust Act, the Uniform Fiduciary Income and Principal Act, and the ULC’s Conflict of Laws in Trust and Estates project), and in Michigan as the principal author of the state’s Rule Against Perpetuities reform (namely PPTPA) and its divided trusteeships and trust decanting statutes.

The webinar discussion will examine:

  • The Relation Back Theory of Powers
  • Springing the Delaware Tax Trap under the Personal Property Trust Perpetuities Act (PPTPA)
  • Springing the Trap under the Uniform Statutory Rule Against Perpetuities
  • Playing Safe with the GST-exemption-sheltered assets under the GST Tax Effective Date Regulations
