Board takes action to address housing security in Oakland County

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners adopted two resolutions at last Thursday’s meeting that are aimed at increasing housing security in Oakland County. The actions create funding for new attainable housing solutions for working families. In addition, it addresses the growing needs of those on a fixed income, including seniors, veterans and the homeless, and it will help ensure vulnerable homeowners are able to keep up with critical home maintenance.

“With these resolutions, we’re taking a huge step forward to ensure housing stability for all Oakland County residents,” Commissioner Charlie Cavell (D-Ferndale), said. “After almost a year of meetings and collaboration with community members, housing advocates, property developers and county departments, I’m so excited to bring these solutions to those who need support with housing.”

Through one resolution, the Board voted to create the Oakland Together Housing Trust Fund, which will increase attainable rental and homeowner occupied housing available throughout Oakland County. The initiative will provide gap funding to build new housing that is attainable for working families across Oakland County. County leaders seek to grow the fund to $40 million by the end of the decade. There are more than 400 similar funds across the country.

The second resolution, authored by Cavell, appropriates funding to create a Shelter Capacity Fund to increase the number of available emergency shelter beds for both individuals and families experiencing homelessness in our community, and to de-congregate currently available units to improve safety and privacy. In addition, the resolution reinstates Oakland County’s Roofs, Ramps and Repairs program, which provides critical home repairs to residents throughout Oakland County and will give priority to older adults.

“Oakland County is leading the way when it comes to removing barriers to attainable housing and increasing opportunities for everyone,” Board Chairman David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak) said. “A resilient, sustainable and strong local economy requires access to attainable housing for all.”

The housing security measures adopted by the board follow the recommendations from the 2021 Oakland County Blueprint to End Homelessness which was made possible from a $250,000 state grant secured by Michigan State Senator Rosemary Bayer (D-Keego Harbor).
