Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued the following statement following the Senate’s passage of House Bills (HB) 4674 and 4675, which now heads to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk:
“I applaud our colleagues in the Senate for passing this legislation. Without proper resources and assistance, those who survive a crime may never recover. I’m proud to support these bills and know the expanded eligibility will provide much-needed support crime victims deserve.”
HB 4674 expands the list of individuals eligible for compensation under the Crime Victim’s Compensation Act. The bill also expands the type of injuries that are eligible for claims, and increases the various awards and thresholds to obtain awards. HB 4675 extends the time period for when a claim can be filed, eliminates provisions that require reporting of a crime within the current 48-hour window, and allows for claims to be submitted electronically.
