Commissioners applaud county executive's 2023-25 budget recommendation, board to begin budget review process

On Tuesday evening at its regularly scheduled meeting, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners welcomed County Executive David Coulter as he presented his proposed 2023-2025 Oakland County budget.

“Budgets are a reflection of our shared values, our priorities, and outline a plan for continued growth that guarantees greater opportunity for everyone,” said Board Chairman David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak).

“This budget makes the largest investments in people across Oakland County, and for the first time in decades, we have a structurally balanced budget presented.”

Woodward applauded Coulter’s team and his leadership as they outlined the framework of the budget which includes:

• A structurally balanced $1 billion budget that relies only on current revenues without drawing from the county’s rainy day fund or existing fund balance

• Continues and expands investments in housing, climate action, and health care

• Improves the county justice system with the creation and funding of a Public Defender’s Office

• Retention efforts and better wages for county employees and law enforcement so we continue to deliver the best county services in Michigan

• Resiliency to navigate future economic uncertainty with long-term planning, health financial reserves, and strategic investments that promote economic growth

“We look forward to getting into the details of this proposed budget, with our in-depth department by department review,” said Commissioner Gwen Markham (D-Novi), chair of the Board’s Finance Committee.

“The county budget is among the most important jobs the Board of Commissioners do every year. We are determined to adopt a budget that sets the course for how we ensure all people and our communities thrive over the coming decade.”

The Finance Committee will begin budget hearings next week and go through September. All department heads will present on their respective budgets, and address commissioners’ questions. Hearings will be streamed live and recorded for all residents to watch on the commission’s website.

The Board is scheduled to adopt the county budget at its annual meeting on September 29. The county’s 2022-23 fiscal year begins October 1.
