Council member pleads no contest to handcuffing Trump critic
EASTPOINTE, Mich. (AP) — A Detroit-area city council member accused of handcuffing a woman who placed Black Lives Matter stickers on 2020 pro-Trump campaign signs pleaded no contest to disturbing the peace.
Eddie Kabacinski was placed on probation for a year during the Monday hearing, but the case could be dismissed if he stays out of trouble, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.
A judge will review it in six months, attorney Stephen Rabaut said.
"Mr. Kabacinski isn't happy about the resolution, did not want to enter a plea, but at the advice of counsel elected to enter the plea because he saw it was probably in his best interest," Rabaut said.
Kabacinski, a member of the Warren City Council, handcuffed a woman who placed BLM stickers on signs promoting then-President Donald Trump during a political rally in Eastpointe in October 2020, according to police.
He was initially charged with assault and impersonating a police officer. Kabacinski claimed he had the power to detain people as a former military police officer.
Applications being accepted for Court of Appeals vacancy
Applications are now being accepted for a seat on the Michigan Court of Appeals, 4th District, to replace vacating Judge Amy Ronayne Krause (effective December 13, 2022).
To be considered for this positions, applicants must be a State Bar of Michigan member who meets the legal qualifications for this office. Applicants should be aware that to be appointed they must reside within the judicial district.
For this vacancy, the Governor’s Office is requesting the following additional supplemental materials:
1. Provide three briefs and/or opinions that reflect the strength of your legal analysis and writing ability. If possible, at least one should involve a question of constitutional law, and at least one should be an opinion or brief related to a dispositive motion or an appeal.
2. Provide a list of at least 5 opposing counsels in recent cases, or if you currently serve on the bench, 5 attorneys that have recently appeared before you. Please include their name, p number, phone number, and the date of your most recent case-related interaction.
Judicial appointment questionnaire, writing samples, resume, and supplemental documents must be submitted using the online portal at www.michigan.gov/
appointments and received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21.
Additional letters of recommendation can still be submitted after the initial submission to judicialappointments@michigan.gov.
