Lecture examines civil rights icon George Crockett Jr.

Wayne State University Law School will host a lecture on the book “No Equal Justice: The Legacy of Civil Rights Icon George W. Crockett Jr.” with co-author Peter Hammer on Friday, December 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium in Detroit.

George Crockett Jr. spent his life fighting racism and defending the constitutional rights of the oppressed. In the recently published book, “No Equal Justice,” Hammer explores Crockett’s life and legacy.

Hammer was named the A. Alfred Taubman Endowed Chair at Wayne Law in fall 2018. He has taught at Wayne Law since 2003 and is the director of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights.

The Keith Center is dedicated to promoting the educational, economic and political empowerment of under-represented communities in urban areas and to ensuring that the phrase “equal justice under law” applies to all members of society.

Anyone with questions about this free lecture may email Hammer at phammer@wayne.edu.

‘Grandparenting Time in Michigan’ explored in MJI?webinar Dec. 8

The Michigan Judicial Institute and Friend of the Court Bureau will present a webinar on “Grandparenting Time in Michigan and Friend of the Court Investigations” Thursday, December 8, from 9 to 10 a.m. via Zoom.

The Michigan Child Custody Act, specifically MCL 722.27b, allows grandparents to seek grandparenting time under certain circumstances.  There is no statutory requirement for the Friend of the Court (FOC) to conduct a grandparenting time investigation.  However, on occasion, the FOC may be ordered to conduct such an investigation and provide information for the court’s use in determining grandparenting time.  This presentation will focus on the following:

• Requirements to seek a grandparenting time order.

• Rebuttable presumption for denying grandparenting time.

• Grandparenting time best interest factors.

• Other factors for the FOC to consider when recommending grandparenting time.

Speaking at the program will be Dr. Tim Cole, management analyst, Friend of the Court Bureau.

To register for the webinar, visit https://mjieducation.mi.gov and scroll down to “events.”  Once registration is approved by MJI, attendees will receive a confirmation e-mail from Zoom with a personal link to join the webinar.
