County executive appoints HR director

Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter has appointed Sunil Asija as director of human resources.

“As a seasoned professional with 20 years of experience in management coaching and training in the business, public service and classroom, Sunil Asija is the ideal choice for the director of Oakland County’s human resources department,” said Coulter. “His promotion from deputy director to the top job in Human Resources is well deserved and a welcome addition to my leadership team.”

Asija had served as Oakland County’s deputy director of human resources/chief learning and development officer since 2022. In that role, he supported employees’ learning and development, providing opportunities for continuing education and trainings.

“As director of human resources, our top priority is to provide outstanding customer service to support employees and departments with consultation and oversight, professional growth and development, and programs that improve people’s lives both at work and beyond.,” Asija said.

Prior, he worked at the State of Wisconsin from 2016 to 2022, rising from a learning and development/organizational change management consultant to a learning and development manager.

Asija has more than 15 years of experience in creating and implementing traditional and e-learning methods, which includes five years as an adjunct professor at Herzing College in Wisconsin. He has a Master of Business Administration from Edgewood College in Wisconsin. Asija is also certified through Prosci's Change Management Program – a global, research-based change management certification.
