Commissioner Markham elected SEMCOG vice chairperson

During the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) annual meeting on June 22, Oakland County Commissioner Gwen Markham (D-Novi) was elected to serve another term as vice chairperson on its Executive Committee.

“Regional cooperation is so important because the big issues — like infrastructure, protection of the environment, broadband expansion, education and quality of life — don’t stop at the boundary of a local community,” Markham said. “It is an honor to have been nominated to serve as an officer of SEMCOG and I look forward to continuing to serve Oakland County residents at this level.”

As vice chairperson, Markham collaborates with other leaders and officers on regional issues. SEMCOG supports local planning through its technical, data and intergovernmental resources. Through its work across seven counties, SEMCOG aims to improve the region's water quality, make the transportation system safer and more efficient, revitalize communities, and spur economic development.

Markham is Oakland County commissioner for District 15, which includes Novi Township, the entire portion of the City of Northville within Oakland County, and portions of the cities of Farmington Hills and Novi. She was first elected to serve on the Board of Commissioners in November 2018. She is the chair of the board's Finance Committee, and she serves as a member on the Economic Development & Infrastructure Committee. In addition, she serves as a member on Oakland County's Airport Committee, Claims Review Committee and Human Trafficking Task Force.
