'Oakland County Hazard Mitigation Plan' discussed online September 27

Oakland County Planning, Zoning, and Land Use will conduct a Virtual Planners Gathering on “Oakland County Hazard Mitigation Plan–A Draft Review” Wednesday, September 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. via Zoom.

Oakland County is updating the County’s hazard mitigation plan. The county’s consultant team will provide an overview of the draft plan—questions and input will be welcomed.

The purpose of mitigation planning is for local governments to identify the natural hazards that impact them, to identify actions and activities to reduce any losses from those hazards, and to establish a coordinated process to implement the plan. Approved mitigation plans are a requirement for local governments to be eligible for projects funded under the Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) and other Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) programs.

Projects funded by HMA grants must be identified in the plan. Additionally, public assistance funding is available to implement mitigation measures for damaged eligible facilities to protect against future damages if the recipient has an approved mitigation plan. Mitigation plans must be reviewed and updated every five years and formally adopted by each participating jurisdiction’s governing body as part of receiving approval.

The guest speaker will be Daiko Abe of Integrated Solutions Consulting Inc., Prospect Heights, Illinois.
