Retired federal district court judge joins ADR firm
Victoria Ann Roberts, retired judge, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan has joined JAMS, a private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide. For more than two decades, Roberts served on the bench and was renowned for her fair and even-handed approach to overseeing cases, as well as her integrity and humanity when applying the law.
While on the bench, Roberts pioneered new initiatives in the federal courts and her community. She also handled several high-profile cases, including serving as a mediator in the City of Detroit bankruptcy case in 2013. From 2010 to 2012, she co-chaired a committee that examined ways to improve the racial makeup of federal juries. When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down court proceedings in 2020, she was a key advocate in moving the court to virtual proceedings.
Based in the Detroit Resolution Center, Roberts will serve as an arbitrator, mediator, court-appointed neutral and neutral evaluator, handling business/ commercial, civil rights, class action/ mass tort, employment, personal injury, product liability, securities, federal law and bankruptcy cases. She is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country.
Prior to her long tenure on the federal bench, Roberts worked in private practice and represented the United States, the state of Michigan, the Detroit Building Authority, the Economic Development Corporation for the City of Detroit, the American Motors Corporation, and individual plaintiffs and defendants. She served as the 62nd president of the State Bar of Michigan. She has served as an international lecturer and educator throughout her career and was also the creator of the Pro Se Legal Assistance Clinic for the Detroit Mercy School of Law and the Early Mediation Program for pro se civil rights cases.
“Throughout my years on the bench, I strived to serve the public and lead with integrity and a commitment to equal justice for all,” says Roberts. “I learned over the years that balancing sharp case analysis with compassion and understanding is the best way to have an impact and navigate complex disputes. In my role at JAMS, I hope to channel that same energy and work with parties of all walks of life to reach meaningful dispute resolution.”
Roberts earned her B.A. from the University of Michigan and her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law.
