Liggins appointed to the WMU Board of Trustees

Warner Norcross + Judd LLP attorney James L. Liggins Jr. has been appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees.

He was appointed to fill a seat left vacant by the passing of Shani J. Penn.

He will serve the remainder of the term that expires Dec. 31, 2024.

Liggins serves as senior counsel in Warner’s Kalamazoo office, where he runs a multifaceted practice encompassing construction litigation, property disputes and real estate concerns, as well as business contractual disputes, criminal defense, health care issues and emergency manager matters.  

He is recognized by Michigan Super Lawyers for Business Litigation and as a recipient of the Honorable George N. Bashara Jr. Distinguished Alumni Award. He serves on the State Board of Ethics and is co-chair of the State Bar of Michigan’s Judicial Qualifications Committee and president of the West Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

Liggins serves on boards for the Bronson Healthcare Group, Harold and Grace Upjohn Foundation, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and Greenleaf Trust.

He is former board chair for Kalamazoo Defender, an indigent defense organization he co-founded. He also previously oversaw Michigan’s high school mock trial program.
