Renowned federal jurist to be saluted


A program titled “The Life and Legacy of Judge Damon J. Keith” will be presented on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit.

The program begins at noon.

Keith was an iconic figure in Michigan and federal law for more than a half-century before passing away in April 2019 at the age of 96.

He served as a U.S. District Court judge for the Eastern District of Michigan before being appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, serving from 1977 until his death.

A native of Detroit, Keith was a prominent civil rights lawyer before being appointed to the federal bench in 1967. The Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights is part of Wayne State University Law School, standing as a symbol of his legal legacy.

Flint man becomes first person charged under new gun law


FLINT (AP) — A Michigan man has been charged under the state’s new law requiring safe storage of guns after his 2-year-old daughter shot herself in the head with his revolver the day after the law took effect.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says the 44-year-old Flint man became the first person to be charged with violating the law that took effect on Feb. 13.
Leyton announced the charges at a news conference Tuesday, one week after the shooting. The man faces charges including first-degree child abuse and a felony violation of Michigan’s gun storage law. The girl is hospitalized in critical condition.

‘Changes in Chinese Design Patent Law’ discussed online


The Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) will host a virtual event on Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. via Zoom.  
Speakers Ruo Cao and Yansheng Yu will discuss “Changes in Chinese Design Patent Law.”

Ruo Cao is a patent attorney at China Patent Agent (HK) Ltd and is located in Beijing. He is certified to appeal before all levels of People’s Court in respect of patent litigations.  

Yansheng Yu is a patent attorney and is the director of the New York Office and the president of China Patent & Trademark Agent (U.S.A.) Ltd.
