Renowned federal jurist to be saluted today

A program titled “The Life and Legacy of Judge Damon J. Keith” will be presented on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. The program begins at noon.

Judge Keith was an iconic figure in Michigan and federal law for more than a half-century before passing away in April 2019 at the age of 96. He served as a U.S. District Court judge for the Eastern District of Michigan before being appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, serving from 1977 until his death.

A native of Detroit, Keith was a prominent civil rights lawyer before being appointed to the federal bench in 1967. The Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights is part of Wayne State University Law School, standing as an important symbol of his legal legacy.
