‘MIDC Standards’ explored in webinar, April 19

The Criminal Defense Association of Michigan will present the webinar “MIDC Standards: Compliance and Client-Centered Best Practices” Friday, April 19, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. via Zoom.

Michigan has seen tremendous improvement and reform in the criminal legal system through implementation of Standards by the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC). This session will provide an overview of the purpose of the MIDC’s work, the Standards approved by the commission, funding available for attorneys and defense resources, and values of client-centered representation.

This presentation will focus on:

• Understand all MIDC Standards, including increased compensation for all assigned counsel (public defenders and private attorneys).

• Know how to seek funding for defense experts, investigators, and related resources.

• Learn how the MIDC works with funding units to ensure compliance and improve public defense statewide.

Presenting at the webinar will be Marla McCowan, deputy director and training director, Michigan Indigent Defense Commission. McCowan works with trial court funding units to facilitate implementation of new continuing legal education requirements for nearly 1,800 attorneys accepting assigned criminal cases in Michigan.
