During its April 11 meeting, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Brendan Johnson (D-Rochester Hills) to appropriate $250,000 for new restroom facilities at Innovation Hills Park in Rochester Hills. This funding is in addition to a $250,000 commitment from Oakland County Parks and Recreation for a total county investment of $500,000. The project will help accommodate the approximately 400,000 people who visit the park annually.

“Oakland County's substantial community investment in Innovation Hills is paving the way for a much-needed restroom upgrade, ensuring that our community's favorite gathering place remains a beacon of recreation and relaxation,” Johnson said. “Personally, I've cherished countless moments at this park with my partner and our faithful canine companion, making this investment all the more meaningful. It's not just about fancy amenities; it's about nurturing a space where residents can unwind, connect and thrive together. Get ready to enjoy Innovation Hills like never before – there's plenty more excitement on the horizon!”

Since opening in 2019, the 70-acre park and playground have become a destination for the area with its glow-in-the-dark sidewalks and miles of walking trails, accessible
play elements, two gardens and a kayak launch into the Clinton River.

“There’s already a lot to love about Innovation Hills, and the addition of an accessible restroom facility is another element that is only going to enhance the visitor experience,” said Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett. “We appreciate the Board of Commissioners and Oakland County Parks for the support they have given us.”

The project is expected to cost a total of $2 million, with the City of Rochester Hills funding the remaining costs. The city plans to begin construction in summer or fall of 2024.

“The playground at Innovation Hills is a tremendous asset not only for the City of Rochester Hills but also for parents and children across our region. Oakland County Parks is proud to support this partnership and commends Mayor Bryan Barnett and Commissioner Brendan Johnson for their leadership in bringing it together,” said Chris Ward, director of Oakland County Parks and Recreation.
