• “Supercharging Office-to-Housing Conversions: How Much Should Government Agencies and Policymakers at All Levels be Doing to Address Downtown Office Vacancies” — This panel will discuss a new package of initiatives and the federal government’s recent efforts to “supercharge” office-to-housing conversions across the country, examining what role government at all levels and policymakers should play in encouraging such conversions given the myriad of challenges.
• “Addressing Financial Abuse of Vulnerable Adults” — According to the FBI, in 2022, adults over 60 reported 88,000 complaints of financial fraud with losses of $3.1 billion, which was an increase of 81% over 2021. This presentation will focus on financial fraud against the elderly and other vulnerable adults and what attorneys can or should do if their client is defrauded and still comply for Model Rule 1.14.
• “A Bankruptcy is Not Necessarily the Death Star to Real Estate Constituents: Key Intersections of Real Estate and Bankruptcy Law and the Opportunities It Can Create” —Attendees will gain a valuable understanding of the bankruptcy process and its key intersections with real estate constituents such as tenants, mortgagors, landlords, creditors, lienholders and more. The program will conclude with emerging trends and insights on the positive opportunities that a bankruptcy can create.
• “Planning and Disposing of Difficult and Dangerous Tangibles” — Planning for art and collectibles can pose challenges when an estate includes difficult and sometimes dangerous items such as: firearms or weapons, hazardous taxidermy, restricted or illegal materials and works stuck in market purgatory due to changes in scholarship or law. Panelists will discuss how to spot these items and what questions to ask your client.
