ABA to observe Well-Being in Law Week

The American Bar Association is offering four webinars to mark Well-Being in Law Week, May 6-10, which coincides with the observance of Mental Health Awareness Month.

Well-Being Week in Law, an initiative of the Institute for Well-Being in Law, takes place the first week of May every year to raise awareness about mental health and encourage action across the profession. This year’s theme is “Well-Being Reboot: A Fresh Start for Positive Change.”

Lawyers are twice as likely as nonlawyers to think about suicide, according to a 2023 study in the journal Healthcare. The study, “Stressed, Lonely and Overcommitted: Predictors of Lawyer Suicide Risk,” found that male lawyers, lawyers who work long hours and young lawyers are at increased risk of suicidal thoughts.

To help improve lawyer well-being and overcome crisis and trauma, the ABA will present four webinars, which are eligible for CLE credit.

The webinars, which are free to ABA members and will be available on demand, are:

“Let’s (Not) Get a Drink: Why Decentering Alcohol Can Transform Inclusion and Well-being for Our Legal Practice” (May 6)

“From Overwhelmed to Empowered: Confronting Navigating Caregiver Responsibilities and Change” (May 7)

“Enhancing Your Legal Work (and Life) with Technology and Innovation” (May 9)

“The Superpower in Lawyering Part 2 — Humanizing Your Law Practice: Elevating Your Legal Skills with Additional Tools” (May 10)

The ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs mission is devoted to the advancement of well-being in the legal profession and to assure that every judge, lawyer and law student has access to support and assistance when confronting alcoholism, substance use disorders or mental health issues.
