OCBA to host ‘Bar Night Out’ May 19


The Oakland County Bar Association will host a spring membership mixer with a “Bar Night Out” on Monday, May 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Roadside B&G, 1727 S. Telegraph Road in Bloomfield Twp.

Attendees can mix and mingle with members of the OCBA while enjoying delicious food and a cash bar.

The event is free for OCBA members and $25 for non-members.  Space is limited.  To register, visit www.ocba.org and click on “events.”

‘Race in Search and Seizure Litigation’ discussed online


The State Appellate Defender Office and the Criminal Defense Resource Center will present a webinar on “Raising Race in Search and Seizure Litigation (Part I)” Tuesday, May 20, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.  Speaking at the training will be Ashley Burrell and Kacey Mordecai from the NAACP Legal Defense & Education Fund.  This is a two-part series and Part II will be on September 16.

Attendees will learn how to pursue a race-conscious approach to search and seizure litigation. After completing the training, attendees will be able to:

• Effectively raise the issue of race at suppression hearings.

• Analyze and apply relevant case law to argue the relevance of race when litigating unlawful searches and seizures.

• Obtain and use information, including social science research, to litigate issues related to race and racial discrimination.

• Make and preserve arguments about the relevance of race.

Commencement ceremony planned for Class of 2025


The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will celebrate the graduating class of 2025 at the Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 9, at 2 p.m. in Calihan Hall on the McNichols Campus of University of Detroit Mercy.

Graduates, dignitaries, and faculty are expected to arrive at Calihan no later than 1 p.m. Guests may begin to be seated in Calihan Hall at 1 p.m. and should be seated by 1:45 p.m. to make way for the academic procession.

Currently, there are no limits to the number of guests allowed per graduate for the School of Law ceremony. No tickets are required.
