Kilpatrick again ordered to pay $1.5M to city of Detroit

DETROIT (AP) — A federal appeals court says a judge made the right call when she ordered former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to pay $1.5 million to the city’s water department.

The restitution is related to Kilpatrick’s 2013 corruption conviction. He was found guilty of fixing city business to enrich himself and reward his pal, Bobby Ferguson.

Judge Nancy Edmunds had ordered Kilpatrick to pay $4.5 million. But it was cut to $1.5 million after a successful appeal by Kilpatrick. The appeals court now is satisfied with Edmunds’ decision.
The court says Detroit’s water department would have paid $1.5 million less for a water main contract if Kilpatrick hadn’t meddled in the deal.

It’s unknown if Detroit will ever see the money. Kilpatrick, 48, is broke and will be in prison for more than 20 years.

‘Making a Murderer’ sequel scheduled to  premiere Oct. 19

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A sequel to the popular "Making a Murderer" documentary series is set to premiere Oct. 19 on Netflix.

The first "Making a Murderer" recounted the story of Steven Avery and nephew Brendan Dassey, who were convicted in the 2005 slaying of Wisconsin photographer Teresa Halbach. Avery and Dassey are serving life sentences in that killing.

Halbach's remains were found in the Avery family's salvage yard. Avery insists police framed him. Dassey has argued detectives coerced him into confessing that he helped Avery rape and kill Halbach.

The documentary won Avery and Dassey legions of fans and spurred demands for their release.

The sequel, "Making a Murderer 2," will follow their appeals. The premiere date is Dassey's birthday.

Florida wants court to nix NRA bid to keep names private

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The state of Florida is arguing there is no reason for the names of two 19-year-olds to be kept confidential in a challenge to the state's new gun law.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals is considering a request by the National Rifle Association. NRA attorneys argued Jane Doe and John Doe will be subject to threats if their names are included in the lawsuit.

The NRA is suing to block a Florida law requiring a gun buyer to be at least 21 years old. The restriction was enacted shortly after a shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi filed a brief saying the NRA has produced no evidence that the  teens are in danger.
