The Wolverine Bar Association (WBA) hosted its general membership meeting and panel discussion on “Breaking Into the Legal Academy: Tips for Aspiring Law Professors” on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at the offices of Bodman PLC inside Ford Field in Detroit. Among those taking part were (left to right) Third Judicial Circuit of Michigan Judge Craig Strong; Niesa Trent Fagan of Bodman, WBA treasurer; Thomas M. Cooley Law School Assistant Dean and Professor of Law Martha Denning Moore, speaker; University of Michigan Law School Visiting Professor Jelani Jefferson Exum, associate professor at University of Kansas Law School, speaker; Michelle A. Carter of Bodman, WBA immediate past president; University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Professor Gary Malveal, chair of faculty recruitment, speaker; Eric Mathis of Butzel Long PC; University of Michigan Law School Professor Dana Thompson, chair of the Urban Communities Clinic, speaker; Wayne County Circuit Court Referee David Perkins; Brandy Robinson, law clerk for the United States District Court, Eastern District of Michigan, WBA president; and Chantez Knowles of Bodman. “African-Americans tend to be under-represented in the ranks of law school faculty – whether that be adjunct faculty or tenure track or clinical,” Robinson pointed out. “So we wanted to use this meeting as an opportunity to figure out how diverse candidates can make themselves competitive in that field.”
