Award seeking stewards of Michigan history

LANSING (AP) -- The Michigan Historical Commission is accepting nominations for the Gov. John B. Swainson Award for public workers who go beyond their job description to help preserve state history. The commission is accepting nominations through April 1, and the award is open to municipal, county and state employees. Commission President Edward Surovell says the state's historic resources are among its greatest treasures and the award recognizes stewards of that heritage. The commission created the award in 1996 in Swainson's honor. The Democrat who died in 1994 was elected governor in 1960.
