Housey submits petitions to file Circuit Court candidacy

Oakland County Friend of the Court Referee Sahera Housey filed petitions with the Michigan Secretary of State to qualify as a candidate for the open seat on the Oakland County Circuit Court.  Considered a Family Court position, the vacancy on the Oakland County bench is due to the impending retirement of Judge Edward Sosnick.

The top two candidates for the Oakland County Circuit Court selected by voters on the non-partisan ballot in the August 7 primary election will go on to the November general election.
“It is very humbling to have had so many citizens of Oakland County come forward to sign petitions to put me on the ballot for this critically important position,” Housey said.  “Not only is it significant to have the active support from members of the judiciary, but literally thousands from every corner of Oakland County have demonstrated their concern about the future of our court and have given our campaign a huge boost.  We are very excited about the opportunity we have been given.”
Sahera Housey’s judicial candidacy is supported by sitting Oakland County Judges Joan Young, Daniel P. O’Brien, and Kathleen Ryan.  Additionally, she is supported by numerous circuit and district judges across southeastern Michigan.
As a referee at the Oakland County Friend of the Court, Housey currently functions as the “eyes and ears” of the Circuit Court Family Division judges and provides recommendations to the Family Court judges in matters including custody, parenting time, child support modification, and enforcement.  She currently manages an annual docket of 3,200 cases and oversees a team of seven.  She has presided over more than 8,000 family law matters, including more than 5,000 child support enforcement cases and more than 3,000 custody, parenting time, and support hearings settling 98% of the matters that have come before her.
Housey presently serves as the chair of the Oakland County Bar Association Family Court Committee.  She is also a board member of Michigan Interprofessional Association on Marriage, Divorce and the Family.
