GM considers expanding Pontiac powertrain HQ

PONTIAC (AP) -- General Motors Co. is considering expanding its global powertrain engineering headquarters in Pontiac. The Detroit News reported Tuesday that the city has approved a tax abatement for the Detroit-based automaker that Pontiac says would create 300 jobs. The 12-year tax abatement, plus three years for construction, would need approval from a state commission. GM spokeswoman Kim Carpenter says the company has explored incentives related to a possible expansion but hasn't decided on whether to move forward. The city says GM would invest $87.6 million in land and building improvements. The automaker's powertrain complex in Pontiac currently employs about 3,500 workers, mostly engineers.
