Alumnus recognized for work with clinic

On Tuesday, Dec. 11, the Wayne State University Law School Alumni Association awarded Christopher G. Darrow (left) its Presidential Award of Merit, for his outstanding contributions made to Wayne Law and its alumni.

Happy to present Darrow with the honor was Wayne Law Alumni Association Board President Rob Kent (right) of Kitch, Drutchas, Wagner, Valitutti, & Sherbrook PC.

Darrow was the driving force behind Wayne Law starting a “Patent Procurement Clinic” where law students procure patents for startup companies and independent inventors on a pro bono basis.

Darrow also helped the clinic get accepted into the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Law School Clinic Certification Pilot Program which allows students to practice at the USPTO before being licensed.  The students work under the close supervision of an experienced patent attorney.  Only approximately 15 law schools nationwide have a patent procurement clinic certified by the USPTO.

Darrow says the goal of the Patent Procurement Clinic is to provide training to law students and stimulate the local economy by providing free legal services to startup companies, which could eventually lead to jobs in Michigan.
