Firm supports free tax help for struggling Michigan families

Financially struggling families in southeast Michigan are getting free help with their income taxes, thanks to a continued relationship between Miller Canfield and Accounting Aid Society. Accounting Aid Society (AAS) is the largest provider of free tax services in Michigan. To fulfill its mission, the nonprofit organization depends on more than 500 volunteers each year, and contributions from businesses, government agencies and foundations to its operating fund. "Miller Canfield has a long history of supporting local communities by providing pro bono services," said Thomas W. Linn, chairman emeritus at Miller Canfield and chair of the firm's Pro Bono Committee. "We have been AAS tax volunteers for several tax seasons--last year volunteering hundreds of hours--and the firm is a regular contributor to the agency's annual fund." Miller Canfield was named in the 2012 Pro Bono Circle of Excellence by the State Bar of Michigan for exceeding the State Bar's voluntary standards for pro bono activities. In 2012, AAS served 20,736 families and helped them receive $23.5 million in refunds and credits, thanks to 579 volunteers.
