Road Commission celebrates 100th year
The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), will hold its centennial board meeting today exactly 100 years from the first meeting held in 1903.
"This is a special occasion," stated Commissioner Greg Jamian, chairman of the road commission for Oakland County. "Looking back on the rich history of our first 100 years helps us to appreciate where we are now and the growth we have experienced. The knowledge will help to guide us forward for the next 100 years."
With its 2,700 miles of roads and the maintenance responsibility of 230 miles of State highways, RCOC has been building and maintaining roads carrying growth and commerce throughout the county's 870 square mile area.
"What we are talking about here is more than just a birthday, it's more about the celebration of our heritage as the State's largest Road Commission" said Jamian. "As we foretell the future of our agency's work, further implementation of new technologies and strategies in road and car integration will play a larger role in improving the safety and reliability of the transportation experience. This year will mark the beginning of laying the groundwork to ensure plans for our roads and bridges through the next century are even stronger than its first."
The Road Commission will host an open house celebrating 100 years of transportation and employee excellence on Saturday, May 18, at 2420 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford. The public is invited to attend. The opening ceremony will be at 11 a.m. There will be historical displays, kid's activities, opportunity to "Touch a Truck, or a Grader or Plow."
