Just the Beginning Foundation hosts third Legal Institute

High school students from schools in and around the City of Detroit participated in the third annual Just the Beginning Foundation (JTBF) Summer Legal Institute.

Providing a welcome and program overview on Monday, June 17, at the T. Levin U.S. District Courthouse in Detroit were JTBF Program Director Sarms Jabra (seated, third from left) and U.S. District Court Judge Victoria Roberts (seated, fourth from right), Eastern District of Michigan.

This pipeline program is designed to provide high school students who aspire to become lawyers with an introduction to the rule of law and the legal profession. It is presented by the Chicago-based Just the Beginning Foundation (www.jtbf.org) in partnership with Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Oakland University, Walmart, the ABA Council of Legal Education Opportunity, and the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan.

The facilities have been provided by the U.S. District Court and the program has received support from sponsors Clark Hill; Collins, Einhorn, Farrell; the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association; Lawrence Garcia; the Hispanic Bar Association of Michigan; Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, and Cohn LLP; Miller Canfield; the Oakland County Bar Association; State Bar of Michigan’s Appellate Practice Section, Health Law Section, Law Practice Management and Legal Administrators, and Young Lawyers Section; the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association; Warner, Norcross, and Judd; and the Women Lawyers Association of  Michigan Foundation.

Cooley Auburn Hills Dean John Nussbaumer, who directs the program along with U.S. District Court Judge Victoria Roberts, noted that “we have 33 students in the program this year, 18 of whom attend schools within the City of Detroit.”
