Marker to celebrate Hemingway's UP trip

SENEY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- A historical marker celebrating a fishing trip along an Upper Peninsula river by famed author Ernest Hemingway will be dedicated later this month. The Michigan Outdoor Writers Association will hold the ceremony on Aug. 14 at the East Branch of the Fox River State Forest Campground in Schoolcraft County. The river is in Seney Township, southeast of Marquette. Hemingway, then 20 years old, and two friends camped near the site in 1919 while fishing. The marker reads that the trip formed the basis for the Hemingway short story, "Big Two-Hearted River." State Natural Resources Director Keith Creagh will attend the 4 p.m. dedication, which is open to the public. The Michigan Heritage Memorials marker is the latest to recognize key events in the state's natural resources and outdoor recreation history. Published: Tue, Aug 13, 2013
