Treasurer's 'Financial Literacy' art contest accepting submissions
The Treasurer Meisner Financial Literacy Multimedia Arts Contest is accepting student submissions through the week of January 27. Submissions of drawings, paintings, photography, mixed media, and videos/DVDs are welcome. Winners are awarded up to $1,000 in scholarship or cash.
"Students need financial literacy skills to control their finances, instead of their finances controlling them," said Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner. "My hope is that students can use their favorite art form to think in new ways about money and finances, and that we can increase awareness of financial concepts, like budgeting, improving your credit score, and saving for college."
Participating students are required to incorporate learning benchmarks from Michigan's public school curriculum on financial literacy into their artwork, benchmarks include: (1) take responsibility for personal financial decisions; (2) make financial decisions by systematically considering alternatives and consequences; (3) develop a plan for spending and saving; and (4) develop a personal financial plan.
"We're using the power of the arts to promote financial literacy," said Meisner. "I hope participating students gain confidence about how to handle their finances."
The Treasurer Meisner Financial Literacy Multimedia Arts Contest has awarded almost $30,000 in scholarship and cash prizes from the generous support of its sponsors, Flagstar Bank and Genisys Credit Union. For additional information, visit www.oakgov.com/treasurer/Pages/financial_literacy.aspx
