Panel to discuss Supreme Court decision at bar association's meeting

 On April 22, 2014, in a fractured 6-to-2 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a change to the Michigan Constitution that forbids affirmative action by public colleges in the state. The Wolverine Bar Association is hosting a panel discussion regarding the controversial history of the ballot initiative that led to the amendment to the state constitution, and what should be done in the aftermath of the Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action decision.

The panel will feature Jocelyn Benson, Wayne State University Law School dean, Election Law & Education Law professor and founder of the MI Center for Election Law; Mark Bernstein, University of Michigan regent; Godfrey Dillard, lead attorney for the interveners in the 2003 University of Michigan affirmative action cases; and Michigan Rep. Thomas Stallworth, Education Committee member.

In addition, the Wolverine Bar will be conducting its annual meeting and elections.

This event will be held Tuesday, May 13, from 6:15 to 8 p.m. at the University of Michigan Detroit Center, 3663 Woodward Avenue in Detroit. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. Register by emailing Shanta S.W. McMullan  at mcmullan@butzel.com by noon on Monday, May 12.
