As part of the Michigan Association for Justice’s (MAJ) Helmet Safety Campaign, the law firm of Goodwin & Scieszka will host its free “Law Day” legal aid clinic Saturday, May 31, at its offices in Birmingham.
New this year, Mother Waddles Perpetual Mission (serving Detroit’s poor), Bethany Christian Center (adoption & foster care) and Grace Center of Hope (serving Pontiac’s poor) will receive $50 every time a DJ gets dunked. WMUZ radio personality Bob Dutko takes the plunge when attenders drop him into 500 gallons of water and a charity gets the cash.
Since Law Day began, Goodwin & Scieszka has donated (and fitted) 10,000 bicycle safety helmets to children at no charge.
Last year, 510 people attended the outdoor fair; about half received a free confidential legal consultation. Attorney Scott Goodwin says, “It’s gratifying to think that these free helmets may have prevented children from being seriously injured. This year, some of the area’s best lawyers will donate their time – it’s a great chance to help area families and individuals.”
Goodwin is president-elect of the MAJ. He has won Michigan Lawyers Weekly “Lawyer of the Year” and made DBbusiness “Top Lawyers” list. Honors include Michigan “Super Lawyer” and the “AV Preeminent” rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
Goodwin founded the Goodwin & Scieszka Law Center in Birmingham with his partner, Jim Scieszka, in 1986.
