OBITUARY
George C. Steeh Sr.
Funeral services were held Sept. 1 at Grace Episcopal Church in Mt. Clemens for retired Macomb County 41B District Court Judge George C. Steeh Sr. who served in both the Michigan House and Senate before he was appointed to the bench.
Steeh, who had continued to act as a visiting judge until he fully retired about four years ago, died Aug. 28 at the age of 94.
Steeh was born in Mt. Clemens, the son of Lebanese immigrants Caram and Dora Steeh.
He attended the University of Michigan from 1938-1942, and immediately after graduation enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the destroyer USS Irwin in the Pacific theater.
Following his discharge, he enrolled in the U-M Law School. Upon graduation in 1949, he returned to Mt. Clemens and joined the law firm of Neale and Hirt (later Neale, Steeh and Hader).
In 1954, he was elected to the State House of Representatives and served for one term, then was elected to the Senate and served from 1957-1962.
In 1980, Steeh was named to 41B District Court in Clinton Township.
After his retirement in 1991, he also worked as an arbitrator, facilitator and member of the Macomb case evaluation panel.
Steeh also served as chairman of Macomb County Democrats 1963-69, president of the Macomb County Bar Association in 1968 and a member of the State Board of Tax Appeals 1974-80.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church for 65 years, serving for many years as an officer of the parish. He also was a long-time member of the Old Crowd.
Steeh's first wife, Barbara Leigh (Young), died in 1971.
Steeh is survived by their five children: Judith, George III, Richard, Edward and Robert.
In 1973, Steeh married Jane (Kelsey) Fahrner, who died in 2011.
Steeh also is survived by three stepchildren, Carol Miller, Jacob and Fred; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family requested donations be made to Grace Episcopal Church, the Macomb County Senior Legal Assistance Program or the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team.
