DETROIT (AP) - The federal government is awarding $2.2 million to Lutheran Social Services of Michigan for programs to help immigrant children who are in the U.S. without their parents.
Democratic. U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence of Southfield announced the grant last Tuesday. She says the money from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will provide housing for "unaccompanied immigrant children."
Lawrence says that the Detroit-based agency is Michigan's largest refugee resettlement agency and says it supports thousands of families from dozens of countries. Its programs include translation, legal representation, school programs and general child services.
