DETROIT (AP) — A judge has agreed to a lawyer’s request for more time to get additional medical information on his client who authorities say killed a friend with a slow cooker during an alcohol-fueled argument about politics.
The Detroit News reports last Friday that defense attorney John McWilliams said 50-year-old Tewana Sullivan has had three past brain surgeries.
McWilliams wants to know if the procedures affected Sullivan’s mental state when 66-year-old Cheryl Livy was beaten to death last October in her Livonia apartment.
Sullivan of Detroit is charged with first-degree murder.
Wayne County Circuit Judge Michael Hathaway is awaiting the results of an independent evaluation to determine if Sullivan is competent to stand trial.
A May 26 pretrial hearing has been scheduled.
