DETROIT (AP) — Clergy, pro athletes and a sheriff are putting in a good word for the founder of a six-state pizza chain who’s facing prison for tax crimes.
The sentencing of Happy Asker of Happy’s Pizza was scheduled for Monday but has been moved to July 6. He was convicted in November of conspiracy and tax crimes in a scheme to conceal millions of dollars in income.
Prosecutors are recommending more than 10 years in prison.
Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon is urging a judge to consider an alternative, saying Asker isn’t a threat to the public. Detroit Lions safety James Ihedigbo says Asker is a “great man” who supports his charity.
The pastor of St. Fabian Church in Farmington Hills says Asker has paid school tuition for needy families.
