The Michigan Employment Lawyers Association presented “LGBTQ Civil Rights: The New Frontier” which was hosted at the offices of Sommers Schwartz PC in Southfield on Thursday, Feb. 11.  The program featured two attorneys working at the forefront of LGBTQ rights: University of Michigan Prof. Julian Davis Mortenson (left) who joined with ACLU counsel in the Caspar v. Snyder case involving the rights of individuals who were married after Judge Friedman’s ruling in Deboer v. Snyder but whose marriages the state refused to recognize; and EEOC attorney Miles Shultz (right) who is currently litigating EEOC v. R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral homes Inc., a case in which the EEOC brought a Title VII discrimination claim on behalf of a transgender woman fired from her job at a funeral home.  Welcoming the speakers was Tad Roumayah (center) of Sommers Schwartz PC.
