The Oakland County Bar Association’s Real Estate Committee presents a seminar addressing the opportunities and challenges facing urban farmers.
“Planting City Roots: Advising the Urban Agriculture Enterprise” will take place Thursday, June 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Oakland County Bar Association, 1760 S. Telegraph, Ste. 100, in Bloomfield Hills.
What do backyard, roof-top and balcony gardens; community gardens in vacant lots and parks; roadside urban fringe agriculture; and livestock grazing in open space all have in common? They are all considered urban agriculture and they are likely coming to a nearby city or suburb, if they haven’t already. Attendees can join an interactive discussion of the challenges faced by urban agriculture enterprises here in Michigan and to learn how to be prepared to assist and advise those enterprises.
Speakers will include Michael Score of Hantz Farms, Tyson Gersh of the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative, and Greg Gamalski of Giarmarco, Mullins, & Horton PC.
Topics of discussion will cover:
• The case for welcoming agriculture to urban neighborhoods and communities.
• The legal and public policy issues facing urban agriculture enterprises large and small.
• Agrihoods: The latest trends in urban revitalization, from farm-to-table.
• Regulating medical marijuana growers under the revised Medical Marijuana Act.
Cost is $50 for OCBA members; $40 for OCBA new lawyers (P75866), paralegals, and students; and $75 for all non-members. Payment at the door is $65 for OCBA members and $90 for all non-members.
