On Wednesday, Aug. 9, the “Oakland is Open for Business” workshop drew more than 150 business owners and entrepreneurs from nearly 50 different local communities across Oakland County. Attendees were interested in the county’s extensive resources for local businesses, and in learning about how to become a registered bidder in order to access opportunities to do business with the county.

“We were thrilled to see business owners from across the COUNTY in attendance,” said Commissioner Janet Jackson. “Based on the response to this event, we would like to do further outreach efforts to ensure that business owners in our local communities are aware of and can access these important resources.”

The chance to engage in one-on-one interactions with department representatives, which many attendees took advantage of after the presentations, was one highlight of the program. Cheri Skomra of Highland, who owns several small businesses with her husband Tony, first sought out county resources when opening a hard drive shredding business eight years ago. She attended the workshop because she was looking for input regarding setting up a new business and growing her other companies. “We found this event very helpful,” Skomra stated. “It was an informative and valuable afternoon.”

The presentations featured information on accessing the One Stop Shop Business Center, business financing options, and how to leverage the hiring and training resources available through the Oakland County Michigan Works! offices. Since the event, the Community & Home Improvement Division of the Department of Economic Development & Community Affairs (EDCA) has had numerous contacts from
contractors who attended and are interested in working with the county on local community development and home improvement projects.

The free workshop was hosted by the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, in partnership with the Departments of Economic Development & Community Affairs and Purchasing. The effort was spearheaded by Commissioners Janet Jackson, Michael Spisz, and Gary R. McGillivray in response to questions they were hearing from members of the business community.

A video highlighting the presentations from the workshop will be available on www.oakgov.com/boc in the near future.
