Fire & Ice Festival adjusts to weather this weekend

Ziplining will replace tube sledding at this year's Fire & Ice Festival in Rochester because the weather has not cooperated in the construction of the sledding hill. Festival goers will still be able to enjoy all their other favorite Fire & Ice activities including fireworks; the Big, Bright Light Show; TasteFest, The Brooksie Way Chill at the Mills, ice carving, dogsled rides, ice skating (bring your own skates), snowshoeing, cross country skiing, carriage rides, and more. The Fire & Ice Festival, sponsored by the Oakland County Credit Union, runs this weekend Friday through Sunday, Jan. 19-21.

"Thanks to Oakland County Parks & Recreation and the Fire & Ice Festival Committee and volunteers, we are able to make this last-minute adjustment so that our guests will continue to enjoy our family-friendly winter event," said J. David VanderVeen, Fire & Ice Festival Committee chairperson. "We are replacing only one activity, the rest are a go."

The Fire & Ice Festival Committee announced after the New Year that most of its winter activities are moving across the street from the open field at Third and Water streets to one at Second and Mill streets where the dogsled rides and snowshoeing have always been. Admission remains free.

The Fire & Ice Festival runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21. Fireworks are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Parking is available in downtown Rochester or at Buffalo Wild Wings at 1234 Walton in Rochester. There will be a free shuttle running between the restaurant and the festival. The Fire & Ice Festival Committee, Oakland County, Oakland County Parks and Recreation, the City of Rochester and Downtown Rochester would like to thank this year's presenting sponsor Oakland County Credit Union; fireworks sponsors Hour Media and Soave Enterprises; major sponsors Rochester Mills Beer Co. and Consumers Energy; and supporting sponsors Blossom Collection of the Moceri Companies, Buffalo Wild Wings, Byers Wrecker Service, Green Electrical Supply, Heat Treating Services, and Premier Pet Supply.
