OBITUARY

Stephen W. Jones

Attorney Stephen Jones of Beier Howlett passed away Sept. 6, 2018. He practiced in the areas of estate planning, probate administration, corporate, and tax and real estate law for more than 50 years.

Jones attended Cranbrook and he graduated from Albion College and the University of Michigan Law School. He was a past chairman of the State Bar of Michigan Probate and Estate Planning Section and a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, as well as an occasional lecturer for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. He also was one of the leading advocates of probate law reform in Michigan. He was one of the drafters of 1993 legislation repealing Michigan's inheritance tax, and worked for its successful passage.

Jones was very active in community service around Royal Oak. He was a past board member of both the South Oakland YMCA and the Royal Oak Boys and Girls Club. He also was actively involved with Boy Scouts Troop 1629, the Royal Oak Historical Society, and First Congregational Church of Royal Oak. He loved spending time with his family-being at a game at the Big House cheering on his Wolverines, traveling and RV camping, and especially enjoying a beautiful sunset over Lake Michigan with his family at their cottage.

Jones is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Karen; his children, Linda (Jeremy) Dostie and Michael (Linda) Jones; and grandchildren, Grace and Charlotte Dostie and Kylie, Stephanie, Spencer, and Maverick Jones.

Arrangements and services were handled by Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Home and the First Congregational Church in Royal Oak. Memories may be shared on the Sullivan and Son online (www.sullivanfuneraldirectors.com) tribute wall for Jones.

Memorials to the Salvation Army or First Congregational Church are appreciated.
