The Oakland County Bar Association will present “Employment Law Year in Review: Health and Safety in the Workplace” on Tuesday, June 25, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the OCBA offices in Bloomfield Hills.
The panel of experts will highlight significant legal developments in labor and employment law from the past year and provide insight into upcoming trends.
Topics of discussion will include:
• Bullying in the Workplace. How is bullying defined? What is the difference between harassment and bullying? Can bullying that is not facially sex-specific be a violation of Title VII? What are the keys to prevention of bullying in the workplace?
• Cyber-Bullying in the Workplace. Social media has become intertwined with all of society, including the workplace. How are employers monitoring the social media accounts of current and prospective employees, and how does such monitoring expose employers to potential liability under common law privacy rights and state and federal laws (i.e., Electronic Communications Privacy Act and National Labor Relations Act)? This discussion will also include employer social media policy best practices.
• A New Frontier: Marijuana Legalization and What It Means for Employers. The legal cannabis landscape is changing day-by-day and minute-by-minute. Of course, these changes—in both medical and recreational use—necessarily mean that employers face an uncertain and shifting landscape. What can and should employers do to address these changes? This seminar will cover the options, approaches and current best practices for employers while providing predictions of the future as the nation moves through uncharted territory of cannabis acceptance and use.
• LGBT Issues in the Workplace in a Post-Obergefell Reality. This seminar will provide an overview of LGBT issues in employment and discuss practical implications for employees and employers. Areas of discussion will include transgender issues and challenges for employers from the perspective of the EEOC, lessons learned from recent filings & cases, erosion of the binary construct of gender, ending the great bathroom debate and predictions for the future.
Speaking at the program will be Aaron V. Burrell of Dickinson Wright PLLC; Timothy Cordes of Cordes Law PLLC; Benjamin M. Low of Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer, & Weiss; and Dolores Korb Mayer of Wayne State University Law School.
