The Michigan Department of State has suspended the licenses of two Oakland County used vehicle dealerships after the dealerships were discovered closed and regulation agents were unable to inspect dealership records.
Department of State regulatory staff attempted to conduct an inspection at Briggs Auto Group, 13001 Capital St. in Oak Park, on March 14. The dealership, owned by Phyllis Briggs and Dustin Barlow, no longer was occupying the property and had been replaced with another business. No one was present to provide the records, as required by law. Therefore, violations were written for noncompliance. The suspension was served May 10.
Department of State regulatory staff attempted to conduct an inspection at Memory Lane Autos Inc., 2287 E. West Maple Road in Commerce Township, on April 25. The dealership, owned by Carl Ryan, wasn’t open and didn’t have any vehicles for sale. No one was present to provide records, as required by law. Violations were written for noncompliance. The suspension was served
May 8, and the department received a change of address form from the dealer May 23. A preliminary conference is being scheduled between department representatives and the dealer.
The Department of State’s Office of Investigative Services inspects and investigates automotive-related businesses. Consumers who have a complaint against Briggs Auto Group or Memory Lane Autos are encouraged to call the Office of Investigative Services automotive complaint line at 517-335-1410.
Dealers may request an administrative hearing to contest their suspension and may regain their license if they show they’ve complied with the law. Additional administrative actions are also possible.
