A celebration of the Greatest Generation will take place during 4th of July week with tours and flights in vintage World War II aircraft at Oakland County International Airport (OCIA) in Waterford. The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) AirPower History Tour will bring the sights, sounds, and stories of World War II aviation to OCIA from Wednesday, July 3, to Sunday, July 7. The aircraft will include FIFI, the iconic Boeing B-29 Superfortress, a North American T-6 Texan, and a Boeing PT-13 Stearman.
“What better way to celebrate America’s 243rd birthday than to experience aircraft that helped bring liberty to Europe, Asia and Africa during World War II,” said J. David VanderVeen, Oakland County’s director of central services who oversees the airports. “These vintage aircraft capture the imagination and bring to life one of the greatest eras in our nation’s history.”
The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) AirPower History Tour is open to the public Wednesday, July 3, through Sunday, July 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Supporting aircraft will be offering rides all five days. The B-29 will fly on Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Cockpit tours of the B-29 will be available beginning at 9 a.m., except on Saturday and Sunday when they will begin at noon.
Access to the Oakland County International Airport Terminal ramp is $10 for adults and $5 for youth ages 10-17. Admission is free for veterans and children nine years and younger. Aircraft rides range from $225 to $1,695 depending on aircraft type and seat position selected. Most of the B-29 flights are sold. There is a discount if a ride on the B-29 is purchased no later than Sunday, June
30. Rides may be booked in advance at airpowertour.org where additional information about the event may also be found.
Oakland County International Airport Terminal is located at 6500 Patterson Parkway in Waterford, Mich. off of M-59 between Airport and Williams Lake roads.

Through more than six decades of collecting, and flying World War II aircraft, the CAF has become the world’s largest flying museum. Their fleet of over 170 World War II airplanes are assigned to unit locations across the U.S. and supported by 12,000 volunteer members. Nearly all the aircraft are kept in flying condition, enabling people to experience firsthand the sight and sound of vintage military aircraft in flight.
