Affordable housing development planned for Oak Park

OAK PARK (AP) - A $15 million affordable housing development for lower-income working families is planned in the Detroit suburb of Oak Park.

Construction of Coolidge Place is expected to be completed by fall 2020. Pontiac-based nonprofit Lighthouse broke ground Wednesday at a 4.5-acre site.

Coolidge Place is expected to feature 64 townhome- and ranch-style apartments, green space and a community center. Lighthouse says rents will range from $454 to $989 per month for one- to three-bedroom units. Residents need to be at or below 60% of the area median income to qualify.

Lighthouse has constructed or rehabilitated more than 100 affordable housing units in Pontiac.

Lighthouse President and Chief Executive Ryan Hertz said it's "extremely difficult for low-income families to climb out of poverty when housing costs consume most of their income."
