County clerk heads initiative to register voters

On Tuesday, Sept. 24, Americans will celebrate National Voter Registration Day with a massive 50-state effort to register voters before Election Day this November. To celebrate, Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds Lisa Brown will sponsor a two-day voter registration drive appearing at four of the Oakland County Community College campuses.

Brown will be joining with thousands of other elections officials and others across the country to celebrate National Voter Registration Day with focused, nonpartisan voter registration efforts and related publicity campaigns.

"Our democracy is best when everyone participates," said Brown. "We hope to recruit as many new voters as possible this week."

Every year millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don't update their registration, or aren't sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day seeks to help eligible voters across the country participate in our democratic process.

Kim Markee, clerk of Waterford Township, is partnering with Brown to register voters at the OCC Highland Lakes campus. "As a local clerk, I'm thrilled to celebrate this national holiday by engaging young people and new voters of our community in the electoral process," said Markee.

Brown is a proud National Voter Registration Day partner.

On September 23 and 24, the Clerk's Office will engage its constituency and community and register voters at the following events:

- Monday, Sept. 23

OCC-Highland Lakes, Woodland Hall, Lower Level, 10:30 a.m. to noon

OCC- Orchard Ridge Campus, Student Center, 1st floor, J building, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- Tuesday, Sept. 24

OCC-Auburn Hills Campus, Student Center, G Building, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Those interested in registering must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old by Election Day (November 5, 2019), and a resident of Michigan. Registrants should bring a valid, government issued photo ID.

Founded in 2012, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right the right to vote. More than two million Americans have registered to vote on this day since the inaugural National Voter Registration Day. The effort's website, www.NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org, provides a listing of National Voter Registration Day events across the country.
