The state of Michigan was recognized as a top five state for creating and delivering citizen-centric services across digital platforms by the Center for Digital Government in their annual rankings announced last week.
Michigan placed fourth in the nation for overall government experience, making it the third straight year the state has finished in the top five. The awards recognize achievements and best practices of government entities who best improve and deliver digital citizen services.
"Michiganders deserve friendly, easy-to-use websites and digital services that give them access to vital programs and information," said Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II. "It is great to be recognized as a national leader in delivering services to residents and we will continue to drive digital innovations to make sure the people's government is working for all people."
Efforts to continually improve the citizen experience, including a replacement of the state's dated website content management system, expanding digital accessibility and the move towards a more consistent look across all state agencies, were reasons for Michigan's high ranking.
Michigan continues to evolve its digital strategies around its citizen-centric-government strategy, an initiative to transform the way people interact with their government. By creating simple and intuitive digital interactions around improved accessibility and a user-friendly look and feel, the state is making digital experiences from one platform to another, and from one agency to another, as seamless and easy as possible.
"We focus our efforts on improving our services and digital experiences for the people who live, work, visit, and do business in Michigan," said Trish Foster, Department of Technology, Management, & Budget director. "Our top five finish the last three years in the category of overall government experience is further proof we are doing our jobs for the benefit of everyone in Michigan."
In addition to the state of Michigan being recognized, the city of Detroit was named a finalist for Overall City Governance Experience and the city of Grand Rapids took fourth overall in that category. In addition to the overall and innovation awards, the city of Grand Rapids was honored for their GR PayIt initiative, and Oakland County was recognized for their College Connection Series in the County Government Experience category.
