The director of Oakland County Michigan Works! whose programming introduced more than 10,000 high school students to careers for their future was honored last week by County Executive David Coulter.
Jennifer Llewellyn, who is also manager of Oakland County’s workforce development division, was given the Excellence in Economic Development Award by Coulter and Deputy County Executive Sean Carlson during the annual meeting of the Oakland County Business Roundtable at the Auburn Hills Marriott at Centerpoint. Coulter praised her for her work ethic and commitment.
“Jennifer is a shining example of good government service,” Coulter said. “She lives and breathes workforce development. She loves it and nobody does it better. We’re lucky to have her.”
Llewellyn, who has been involved in workforce development for 21 years – the past three and a half years for Oakland County – directed multiple significant initiatives for the county, including:
• Oakland County Manufacturing Day connected 1,300 high school students from the area to nearly 50 manufacturing companies, giving the students an up-close view of potential jobs for their future and the companies exposure to their future workforce. The event was awarded “Best in Class” by the National Association of Counties.
• MiCareerQuest SE attracted more than 9,000 students and chaperones from the region, 120 exhibitors and 1,000 team members, to the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi to introduce them to 200 in-demand occupations the students may not have known existed. Llewellyn raised more than $200,000 from sponsors to stage the event.
• Oakland County Michigan Works! assisted more than 3,000 companies with their workforce development needs in 2018.
Llewellyn said she was humbled and admittedly a bit nervous when she was summoned to join Coulter and Carlson at the podium. She was unaware that she was being honored.
“I come to work every day to do a job I love,” she said. “I love workforce development. I do it to help people. We have an amazing team. No one person can do this alone. It really takes a village.”
